What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refers to a system of healing that has developed in China over a period of more than 3,000 years. Originally, it was mainly practiced in East Asia, especially in countries such as Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. In these regions, specific variations have evolved based on TCM, with Japanese Kampo medicine being particularly well-known. The World Health Organization (WHO) coined the term “Traditional Chinese Medicine” (TCM) for this healing system.

It is important to note that the term “TCM” in Chinese itself does not include the word “traditional.” Therefore, a more accurate translation of “TCM” would simply be “Chinese medicine.” However, the use of the term “Traditional Chinese Medicine” or “TCM” in the West includes the aspect of tradition, which is not explicitly present in the original Chinese designation.
