Depression is a mental disorder characterised by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. It affects emotions, thoughts and behaviour, leading to a range of emotional and physical problems such as difficulty completing daily tasks, lack of energy, weight changes, sleep disturbances and feelings of guilt or worthlessness. Unlike a temporary low mood, it is a serious medical condition that requires appropriate treatment.

What is silent depression?

Silent depression is a form of depression in which the symptoms are less visible. People affected may appear to be functioning normally while struggling internally, and they often hide their suffering, which makes diagnosis and treatment more difficult. It is important to be alert to subtle signs such as unexplained mood swings, persistent fatigue or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Recognised symptoms of depression include a persistently depressed or empty mood, diminished interest in activities once enjoyed, rapid weight loss or gain, sleeping too little or too much, and constant fatigue regardless of how much you sleep. Other symptoms are feelings of guilt or low self-worth, indecision and difficulty concentrating, and dark thoughts about death or suicide. Everyone reacts differently and may experience all or only some of these symptoms.

How is depression treated?

There are several strategies for recovery from depression. Psychotherapy allows you to talk to a mental health professional and is always prescribed in cases of proven depression; it can be combined with other treatments. Antidepressants help to stabilise mood and regulate neurotransmitters, with a slight improvement often seen in the first two weeks and fuller effects after 6 to 12 weeks. Light therapy can also support treatment, particularly for seasonal depression.

How long does it take to recover from depression?

Depression is an illness that sets in slowly, and recovery also takes time. On average, the effects of treatments such as antidepressants can be seen after 6 to 12 weeks, while psychotherapy and complementary therapies may take several months to show significant results. Relapses are possible, but this does not mean recovery is impossible; following the prescribed treatment and consulting a health professional regularly are essential.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at certain times of the year, typically during the autumn and winter months when daylight hours are shorter. This mood disorder can significantly affect daily life, leaving a person feeling fatigued, unmotivated or deeply sad. In some cases people experience SAD during spring or summer, although this is less common.

What are the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder?

The symptoms of SAD are similar to those of depression but occur seasonally. Common signs include persistent fatigue and low energy, sadness, hopelessness or irritability, and sleep disturbances such as sleeping too much or struggling to wake up. Cravings for carbohydrates and weight gain, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, and difficulty concentrating are also typical. In severe cases people may experience thoughts of death or suicide, and professional help should be sought urgently if this occurs.

How can you spot Seasonal Affective Disorder in yourself or others?

Spotting SAD involves paying attention to changes in mood and behaviour during particular seasons, typically autumn and winter. Look for increased fatigue, irritability, loss of interest in enjoyable activities, changes in sleep patterns such as oversleeping, and noticeable weight gain or carbohydrate cravings. If someone close to you seems persistently sad or withdrawn during these months, offering support or encouraging them to seek professional help can make a real difference.
