When is a bee or wasp sting a medical emergency?

A sting becomes an emergency if there are signs of an allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, severe swelling or dizziness. In these cases a health professional should be consulted immediately or a pharmacy contacted without delay. In Switzerland, the emergency number to call is 144.

What is bronchiolitis in babies?

Bronchiolitis is a common viral respiratory infection that mainly affects infants and young children, usually under the age of two. It causes inflammation and congestion in the small airways of the lungs, known as the bronchioles, making it difficult for the baby to breathe. It is most often caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

What are the symptoms of bronchiolitis in babies?

The symptoms of bronchiolitis often begin like a common cold and can worsen as the infection moves into the lower airways. Common signs include a runny nose, a cough that becomes more persistent and wet-sounding, rapid or laboured breathing, and wheezing, a high-pitched whistling sound when exhaling. Some babies have a mild fever, feed poorly, seem unusually tired, or show hollowing of the ribs as the skin pulls in with each breath.

How long does bronchiolitis last in babies?

Bronchiolitis typically lasts about one to two weeks, with symptoms peaking around the third or fourth day. Most babies start to improve during the second week, although the cough may linger for a few more weeks. The early stages are the most concerning, as breathing difficulties tend to intensify then.

How can bronchiolitis be managed at home?

Most cases of bronchiolitis can be managed at home with supportive care. This includes keeping the baby hydrated with small, frequent feeds, clearing the nose with saline drops and a nasal aspirator, and slightly elevating the head during sleep to ease congestion. Using a cool mist humidifier can help keep the airways moist, and the baby's breathing should be monitored closely.

When does bronchiolitis require hospital admission?

Bronchiolitis can sometimes be severe enough to require hospital admission, particularly if the baby cannot maintain adequate oxygen levels, has severe difficulty feeding and is becoming dehydrated, or shows signs of respiratory distress such as retractions or flaring nostrils. Most babies who are admitted stay in hospital for about two to five days. During this time they may receive oxygen therapy, fluids through a drip and close monitoring.

When should you seek medical help for a baby with bronchiolitis?

Medical help should be sought urgently if a baby is breathing very fast or with difficulty, is under three months old and has a fever, or shows signs of dehydration such as fewer wet nappies. Blue lips or a bluish tint to the skin, or becoming lethargic and difficult to wake, are also warning signs that need immediate attention.

What is the difference between bronchiolitis and bronchitis?

Although the names sound similar, bronchiolitis and bronchitis are distinct conditions. Bronchitis affects the larger airways, the bronchi, and is more common in older children and adults, leading to a cough with mucus. Bronchiolitis affects the smaller airways, the bronchioles, is more common in babies and toddlers, and causes obstruction of these tiny airways that makes breathing difficult.

How does a video consultation work?

A video consultation works in three steps: you book an available video slot on OneDoc, you receive a secure link, and at the appointment time you join from your phone or computer. The doctor discusses your concern and can advise you, issue a prescription or a medical certificate, or recommend an in-person visit if needed.

Is a video consultation suitable for my child, and when should I go in person/ER?

For advice, minor illnesses, rashes and follow-ups, a video consultation is well suited to children. Seek in-person or emergency care for warning signs such as breathing difficulty, persistent high fever in a baby, severe pain or dehydration. When in doubt, the paediatrician will guide you during the call.
