### Presentation of the healthcare professional
Prof. Alon completed his medical studies with the state examination at the University of Milan in 1972. He subsequently worked there as a resident in anesthesiology for several years before moving to the University Hospital Zurich in 1976. He served as a military doctor in Israel from 1963 to 1965 and again from 1978 to 1979. From 1990 to 1991, he was a Research Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco.
In Zurich, he worked as a resident and later as a senior physician until 1997. He then moved to the Regional Hospital Lugano, where he served as chief physician and department head at Ospedale Civico and Ospedale Italiano. He also co-founded the Anesthesia Nurse School (Scuola Infermieri Anestesisti del Canton Ticino) and was President of the Association of Ticino Anesthesiologists (Associazione Medici Anestesisti del Cantone Ticino, AMACTI).
Since 1993, he has been a lecturer at the University of Zurich and was appointed as a professor in the summer of 2000. He is a specialist in anesthesiology and pain therapy, running a pain therapy practice in Zurich. He serves as a consulting physician at the University Hospital Zurich and holds the title of Titular Professor at the University of Zurich. He was President of the Swiss Pain Society (SGSS) and remains involved as an annual leader of the multidisciplinary pain course. He is also a board member of the European Pain Federation (EFIC).
Prof. Alon completed his anesthesiology training in Zurich and undertook further training abroad in the USA, UK, and Germany. His research interests have included general anesthesia in obstetrics, postoperative pain management, regional analgesia during childbirth, and chronic pain treatment.
A pioneer in obstetric epidural anesthesia in Switzerland since the 1980s, Prof. Alon shifted his focus from anesthesia to pain therapy after many years as a senior anesthesiologist. At the University Hospital Zurich, he served as a consulting physician at the Pain Outpatient Clinic while maintaining his private practice in pain therapy. He co-founded, served on the board, and was President of the European Society of Obstetric Anesthesiology. He continues to advocate for the recognition of chronic pain as a distinct disease in Switzerland.
Since September 2015, Prof. Alon has been practicing at Arzthaus Zürich City.
