Dr. med. Mélanie Buchwalder 

Dr. med. Mélina Buchwalder is a Senior Physician and Specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Frauenzentrum Bern of Lindenhofgruppe AG, where she has been working since January 2024. She has many years of clinical experience in women’s health, including hospital-based and outpatient gynecology and obstetrics, as well as additional qualifications in pregnancy ultrasound.

Gynecology and obstetrics focus on women’s health throughout different stages of life. The specialty includes preventive gynecological examinations, contraception and family planning, the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the female reproductive system, as well as medical care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Depending on the individual medical situation, consultations may also include diagnostic examinations and ultrasound assessments.

Before joining the Frauenzentrum Bern, Dr. Buchwalder worked as a Specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Frauenmedizin Bern from 2022 to 2023. Prior to this, she served as a Senior Physician at the Women’s Clinic of Spitalzentrum Biel from 2020 to 2022.

A significant part of Dr. Buchwalder’s professional training took place at the University Department of Women’s Health at Inselspital Bern. She initially worked there as a resident physician in gynecology and obstetrics from 2013 to 2017 and subsequently as a Senior Physician from 2017 to 2020.

Dr. Buchwalder obtained her specialist qualification in gynecology and obstetrics in 2018. In the same year, she received the SGUM Certificate of Competence in Pregnancy Ultrasound. Pregnancy ultrasound is used to monitor fetal development, assess the course of pregnancy, and investigate specific maternal or fetal questions when clinically indicated.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Buchwalder worked as a resident physician in gynecology and obstetrics at Spital Visp from 2010 to 2013. She also gained experience in internal medicine at Spital Interlaken and in surgery at Hôpital du Chablais in Monthey, providing her with a broader clinical background alongside her specialization in women’s health.

Dr. Buchwalder studied human medicine at the University of Lausanne from 1999 to 2007 and completed her Swiss Federal Medical Examination in 2007.

She received her doctorate in 2016 for research in the field of gynecologic oncology. Her doctoral work compared radiocolloid and indocyanine green fluorescence imaging for sentinel lymph node mapping in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for cervical cancer. Sentinel lymph node mapping is a diagnostic surgical technique used in cancer care to identify lymph nodes that may be particularly relevant when assessing the possible spread of a tumor.

Her professional background combines general gynecology and obstetrics with experience in pregnancy ultrasound, gynecologic surgery, and academic research in gynecologic oncology.
