Preanalytics
The first step to reliable laboratory results.
Preanalytics includes all steps prior to the actual laboratory analysis. This involves sample collection, transport and storage of the sample material, as well as the transfer of the sample with the corresponding patient data under appropriate conditions to the laboratory. The quality of the laboratory results is significantly influenced by the conditions to which the sample material is exposed before analysis. Since the laboratory itself has only limited influence on this phase, responsibility lies primarily with the collecting healthcare professionals. Solid knowledge of preanalytical influencing factors is essential to avoid errors.
Common sources of error in preanalytics:
- Incomplete or incorrect patient data
- Incorrect test request or unsuitable sample material
- Pre-treatments such as infusions or antibiotics
- Incorrect collection container or insufficient sample volume
- Spoiled or improperly stored sample material

Our measures to avoid errors:
Thanks to strict incoming controls, we detect many errors upon arrival of the sample material. Our experienced biomedical analysts (BMAs) identify potential irregularities during the analysis. In addition, our team of FAMH specialists performs a plausibility check to detect implausible results – considering the indication, medical history, previous values (delta check), and communication with treating physicians.
