It can spread through contact with the skin and mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, mouth, anus and genitals, through wounds or blisters, through droplets of saliva or respiratory secretions, and through contact with infected objects such as bed sheets, clothes or door handles. Unprotected intercourse considerably increases the risk of infection.

Mpox is generally uncomplicated, although the symptoms can be distressing, and the disease usually heals spontaneously over a few weeks until the pimples have completely healed. In some cases complications can arise, such as pneumonia, septicaemia, encephalitis or inflammation of the cornea. Immunosuppressed people, pregnant women, children and adults who have not been vaccinated against smallpox are at greater risk of complications.

What conditions can mpox pimples be confused with?

Mpox pimples can be mistaken for the spots of other conditions, including chickenpox, herpes, syphilis or an allergic reaction. Because of this overlap, it is important to contact a doctor directly if suspicious spots appear on the body. The doctor can guide you towards an accurate diagnosis.

What should you do if you have symptoms of mpox?

If you have symptoms of mpox, contact your doctor immediately, as they will assess whether a test is necessary. While waiting for a diagnosis, avoid leaving your home, do not meet other people and, if possible, isolate yourself from the rest of the family. If you have no choice but to go out, wear a mask, cover any pimples, and do not share clothes, sheets or towels with others.
