Blood donation *keyboard\_arrow\_right* ## What is a blood transfusion? A blood transfusion involves receiving blood or blood components, such as red blood cells, platelets or plasma, intravenously. It is a common procedure: in Switzerland an average of 700 donations are used every day. *keyboard\_arrow\_right* ## When might someone need a blood transfusion? Several situations can lead to a person needing a transfusion. Accidents, whether minor or serious, can make a transfusion vital, sometimes requiring 60 or more donations. Certain operations such as heart surgery or organ transplants need transfusions to compensate for blood loss. A large proportion of donations are used to treat cancer, and complications of pregnancy, particularly anaemia, may also require a transfusion. *keyboard\_arrow\_right* ## Why are blood transfusions important in cancer treatment? A large proportion of blood donations are used to treat cancer. Some cancers cause internal bleeding, and although chemotherapy destroys cancer cells, it also tends to destroy the cells in the bone marrow where blood is produced. Transfusions help to make up for this loss. *keyboard\_arrow\_right* ## Why is it important to donate blood? Donating blood saves lives. Many transfusions may be needed for a single operation, and blood cannot be stored for more than 49 days, so a constant supply is required. In Switzerland only 2.5% of the population donate blood, which is why regular donation by eligible people is so important. *keyboard\_arrow\_right* ## Why does donating blood matter? Giving blood saves lives. Many operations or complications may require blood, including difficult pregnancies or births, accidents, cancer, malaria and malnutrition. The need for blood is constant because blood can only be stored for a limited period before being used, and some blood groups can have particularly low reserves, so donation by eligible people helps avoid shortages. *keyboard\_arrow\_right* ## Can you donate blood after dental treatment? Visiting a hygienist or dentist can create small lesions through which bacteria or viruses can enter, so certain waiting times apply before donating blood. These are 24 hours after scaling or a dental dressing, one week after a dental extraction, and two weeks after the end of a course of antibiotics if the extraction was complicated or required surgery. *keyboard\_arrow\_right* ## When should you postpone donating blood? Donating blood should be postponed in several situations. If you are unwell or have cold or fever symptoms you cannot donate until you have fully recovered. Waiting times also apply if you have recently taken certain medication, had a vaccination or undergone a medical procedure, if you have a new tattoo, piercing or acupuncture treatment within the last 4 months, if you have travelled outside Switzerland in the last 6 months, or after having a new sexual partner in the last 4 months. In principle, if you are in good health, aged between 18 and 60 and weigh more than 50 kilos, you are eligible to donate blood. Regular donors with no health problems can donate up to the age of 75.
